Heather beds

After a stroll around the RHS garden at Wisley at the weekend I wondered whether anyone on here looks after any heather beds ? I can remember in the 70's they were in fashion along with dwarf conifers , probably coinciding with Adrian Bloom's clever marketing at the time. Wisley's heather beds looked good and made me consider some places here where I could use these plants. Mind you in our local garden centre last autumn they were selling some interesting ? coloured leaf forms ?? that had been sprayed with food dye :-0

There are some very choice varieties out there. Along with the Ericas they can be great in very exposed areas. As Steve mentioned, you can have colour and interest all year round. Just keep the dwarf conifers away and steer clear of those nasty sprayed ones that rear their ugly heads as we approach christmas.
