I have a Hayter Motif 48 and it was backfiring and reving up and down. I cleaned the Carburetor out which seemed to sort the problem out for the most part. I'm not a mechanic though I should point out! I used this video...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ArCAivgAyww&t=427s

You can get proper carb cleaner, it comes in a spray. But wear some googles as it sprays up quite alot. Good luck!
Could also be the flywheel that has moved on the woodruff key - knocks the ignition timing out.
You'll have to take off the top cover and maybe fuel tank to get at it.
