The early ones had a drive shaft. Not too sure when they changed to belts but at least 15 years ago. I’ve had six of these in 31 years of Garden contracting and they have all been very good mowers. They leave a very good stripe which is still visible when I revisit my fortnightly cuts. I have the belts and tenioners changed yearly because they slow down as the belts wear unlike the old shaft driven ones that never lost speed, I wish I had just replaced the engines on them and still had them. On eBay there are reconditioned ones making more money than the belt driven ones. The belt and tensioner normally costs around £120 fitted, I think that may include servicing at the same time. I would say as long as everything else is okay you would have a good mower that will last you years. My current ones I’ve had for twelve years, they’ve both had new engines but they are used six days a week, nine months of the year.
