Hi Jason Ive been using one since July down here on the relatively dry south coast. It's a lovely mower but on small wet lawns its a bit of a struggle. It has a split roller but turning on wet grass still causes damage and to be honest i think this will be the case with any roller mower. I wouldnt be without a roller though as my customers absolutely love the stripes. They dont realise how much difference stripes make until they see them. So yeah probably the best (only?) compact roller mower on the market but not suitable for sopping wet grass.
Cheers Lee, whats the pick-up like in the wet ? Does it drop on the lawn or clog up unacceptably?
The pick up is pretty good I think although I don’t have much to compare it with. It’s a Honda engine as opposed to the usual Briggs & Stratton.
Bought one middle last of last season, they are fast - you'll have no problem covering lawns quickly. Roller does a great job, I've not noticed many marks in wet grass, guess it depends on the grass, how long its been raining etc etc.
I found wet pickup better than previous Hayters, but I've not used the latest 56's. Better than my HRX and HRD, but.....I did find the chute could block after collector emptying. I tried emptying before full to try to make sure all of the cut grass had been moved along the chute, still happens, maybe they all do it, not used a Viking to compare to.
Also found 2 weekly cuts in the summer need going over twice, it seems to spit long pieces of grass out of the sides. Found that more of an annoyance to be honest.
I've been thinking of getting one of these too.
Scott,
I have a HRX476. What would you say is the better mower Honda or the Hayter.
Used Hayter through the 80s and 90s, brilliant mower. Started to go down the nick especially in the wet in recent times. Honda are solid beasts, bit slow, okayish in the wet. If stripes weren't an issue i wouldn't stray from etesia which is what i use if its particularly wet. i just wish the Viking was more solidly built, its quick has a solid box which is always better than cloth and is good in the wet.
Honda is so slow.
Took the HRX roller unit out for maintenance, what a pain, that did it for me, couldn't see myself messing around with that every year.
Cut wise, I like both tbh, ended up using either the Hayter or HRD, as both cover the ground quickly. Longer grass pickup - HRX wins over the Hayter on one pass.
Just recently sold the HRX, going to try a Viking this season.
Hi Jason,
We are based in Preston so I can sympathise with the northwest weather! We bought a Hayter 41 Pro when they were first realised last year from Garlick garden machinery (our local dealer).
We find it alot easier to use on the new build houses. If it is soaking wet it will drop abit of grass but nowhere near the amount of the previous mowers we have used (Hondas, Older Hayters). Collection would most likely be better if we cleaned out the bag more often!
We have also had a viking in the past but it was back at the dealers aleast every other month. After a season with the Pro 41 weve not had any problems yet.
All in all I would recommend one, maybe see if you can get a demo one to trial?
Hi Jason,
I've three mowers, a mountfield, honda izzy and a viking 545vr, out of the three the viking wins for collecting wet grass which having a high lift blade and plastic box instead of cloth definitely helps. I'm looking to buy a etesia duocut this season or next as i want a mulching mower, just wish it had a roller.
I've had the viking a season and it's got slower, is there a way of speeding it up.
Have a look see if the governer spring arm has been bent sometimes happens when going around shrubbery etc. Also don't be tempted to buy the after market roller for the etesia no matter what etesia say in the video it falls off when turning.
