Have you ever used a Scythe

Hi All,

We keep getting asked for Scythe's lately and are considering adding a couple of different blade sizes to our range.

I was just wondering, if any of the community have used a Scythe and if they minded sharing their experiences with this type of tool.

The main reason for asking us about Scythe's seems to be to tackle large areas i.e meadow grass etc etc.

Now I have little experience in the use of a Scythe, but I'm guessing its all down to technique and experience. I do worry that the requirement for this type of tool could be a romantic notion that after one or two trips out gets filed in a garage awaiting the opportunity to maim the owner.

We use a zero turn flail and strimmers on long grassed areas. I think the finish is better and although for speed a scythe will beat a strimmer in a short competition I doubt an operator on one could use it all day at top speed!

  • I use a scythe for meadow cuts it cuts the grass cleanly, whereas a strimer will tend to mulch the and return too many nutrients to the meadow. In this situation the finish is not the most important issue, but I'd like to say the finish I achieve now is pretty good and Nick is right once you have the knack scything is faster than a strimmer and a lot less noise and pollution!

When we bought our farm here in France, there was a small scythe in the barn (it's now an ornament on a wall).

Our neighbour told us of how he and his brother used to take turns in cutting the grass around the place.

  • Well in the last few months, I'd say at least eight people have asked me if I plan to stock scythe's. So I guess that's a demand I should supply, I expect they will be a nightmare to ship.
