Have you ever had your tools/equipment stolen?

Hi everyone, over the last few years, we've seen an ongoing rise in the number of people having their tools and equipment stolen – often from their vans.

Does this ring true for you guys? We surveyed our customers and the wider trades community to see just how big of an issue it is, and the results were staggering. 1 in 3 have had their tools stolen, and it costs victims over £3000 on average. That's why we've launched a campaign to #StampOutToolTheftWe're petitioning for tighter regulations in the selling of secondhand tools, and stricter fines for those convicted – the ambitious aim is to reach 100k signatures and see the issue debated in parliament, and we're hoping to raise a lot of awareness of the issue in the process.

If you – or anyone you know – has been affected, please sign our petition and help to spread the word using the hashtag #StampOutToolTheft.

You can learn more and sign the petition here: simplybusiness.co.uk/stamp-out-tool-theft

Thanks everyone :)

Signed, my van was broken into quite recently,  any initiative to try and reduce van break in is worth a try!

      • So sorry to hear that! It's so awful to hear this happens, and unfortunately it's so common too. Hope that you and your business were able to recover quickly.

Theives are finding more and more ways to break in and steal tools, that's why tool theft needs to be taken more seriously. Thanks so much for your support! :)

    • Amazing – thanks so much for your support :)

  • There really is nothing the government can do........anything on Ebay/carboots etc could be stolen.... do you ban/regulate the sale of secondhand goods? It can't be done.  It really is up to us to empty our vans of valuable tools at night, fit extra security locks on the doors, cable locks etc to secure tools in the van during the day, alarms.  I've had tools stolen when I didn't implement these........ no problems now for many years.

Harsher penalties would still be a good thing though Geoff. Van break ins are worthwhile and one of the reasons is the thieves virtually get away with it at the moment.

      • Great point Jim!

      • Absolutely, Jim. There is little deterrent and little chance of being caught. I'm not normally a hanger/flogger but I'd certainly make an exception for van tool theft.

Hanging and flogging is counter-productive and a bit non-P.C...!

Surely you'd flog, then hang them? ;)

    • Thanks for letting us know Geoff. Our main objective is to bring awareness of this so more can be done. It's becoming more and more common and thieves seem to getting more brazen. Thanks for sharing your experience – some really good pointers :)
