Hard cut back of 'Buxus Sp' Hedge

Hi all

I have been asked by a customer if id hard cut back one side of the hedge (approx 1ft) as its overhanging their path making it too narrow to walk up. Generally I believe these are cut back in April - May but needed some expert advice! Cutting back this far will inevitably expose just the wood, but will it leaf quickly again? It is a well established hedge!

Thanks so much!

  • Many thanks Tom! So would you think it prudent to do it now?

I would wait until you have a forecast with no freezing temps for a week or more.
Having said that the weather is all wrong so who knows:-)
  • Wait until the weather warms up a bit before cutting it. If it were me, I would cut it and then apply a mulch at the base and feed it with liquid fertiliser to encourage healthy growth. Be sure to have a clean blade when cutting it and clean your seceteurs/ hedge cutters afterwards to reduce the risks of spreading Box Blight. Dispose of clippings carefully.
    • Thanks Andrew/Richard - Great advice! I think I shall check forecast ahead.

many thanks for your help. Hope alls good for you.
