  • Hi Ian I used to make a lot of baskets, they seem to have fallen out of favour a bit these days due to the maintenance required and that they are not always seen as de rigeur for posh establishments, which a lot of pubs and restaurants aspire to these days, as they can charge higher prices for food etc. However there must still be a market out there, if you see the brackets already up and even the watering systems there then thats a sign they have had baskets at some point, they may even have the empty baskets somewhere ready for refill (just beware the snappy old rusty chains)      I found that it was easier to convince landlords etc that baskets which had a semi permanent planting of dwarf evergreen shrubs and variegated ivy would last longer, that way they could be taken down and rejuvenated with some seasonal colour, bedding etc without having to empty the whole basket, keeping ongoing costs down, obviously plenty of slow release fertiliser and water retaining granules mixed in the compost and the larger baskets seem less prone to drying out.   Tended to use liners rather than moss, even an empty compost bag turned black side out and neatly cut around the top of the basket, the trailing plants tend to hide it.... Some places were notorious for never watering so I have even planted baskets with some of the hardier succulents, and some restaurants etc liked herbs in theirs.... I assume you have a greenhouse or tunnel, if you line the baskets out on large pots or buckets you can plant up at least partially with seedlings or plugs to save on costs and add the finishing touches later

    • Cheers Billy, yes I have tunnel and have found a local nursery to supply plugs at a good price.  I guess its just a case of putting my sales hat on a getting out there again with marketing  etc
