Never heard of Friskars before. Had a quick look through the catalouge and looks good stuff! Quite like the look of the swoe... in total honesty I didnt know what a swoe was. However I did come across a Wilkinson Sword version a few years ago and havent ever been able to find one since, I was informed it was an american hoe!
Cheers!
What sort of work will you be undertaking at Savill?

We use bahco shears and loppers http://bahcosupply.com/ a bit more expensive than most but t well worth the money, I also love silky saws http://www.silkyfox.co.uk/sheathedsaws.html
Hope this helps

Oh right thats interesting. How long ago was that? Haven't had time to keep upto date with horticulture weekly since before christmas so am a little out of date.
Well I'm dure to spend 12 months there, 50/50 Savill Gardens and The Valley Gardens and from there on 2 months each doing different tasks. I expect it to be largely plant orientated as it is based on providing experience to those who have recently come out of study, although I am sure regulaur garden maintenance is bound to be part of the job.
I would expect that the gardens themselves are well equipped, and so I am really looking for small tools that are good to own personally, or larger tools that do a better job than more commonly used tools. I.e. i have a bulldog long handled irish shovel because i find them far easier to use than a typical builders or ground shovel that most buisnesses supply.
Cheers, Jamie

Cheers for that! I have been looking at the Silky saws but not sure on what to get. E.g. folding or fixed, based on there usability and how clumsy they are attached to a belt all day every day. Do you have a fauvorite?

Get yourself a decent trenching / ditching spade. Comes in handy all the time. Got my Spear and Jackson one from Wickes.
Faithfull 4ft point and chisel bar (from eBay) - good for moving heavy things and attacking rocks if you have to knock posts in.

Well Iv got plenty to choose from! Some products that have stood out are the Fiskars Floral Bypass Snips, look very ergonomic but will try find a pair to test out first. Il be ordering a Friskars swoe very soon as, said before, have been looking for a similair product for ages. And Pro Gard I will take your advice on the Gomatro, do you use the 240 or 300mm blade? And do you often have it strapped to your hip?
That will probably have to settle for now as I have just had to purchase a new pair of Stihl brushcutting trousers (great pants!) and a 2nd hand pair of Stihl hiflex Type C chainsaw pants (do a little chainsaw work and trying to get into the climbing).
Cheers!
Cant afford to be spending 50+ on things like spades at the moment, especially when most of these variants will be stocked in the gardens. I prefer the 5ft point and chisel bars, only because im used to digging deep hole ;) but don't need one of my own currently.
The Gomatro and the Swoe will definately be getting ordered soon I think!
Oh and back to spades - for anyone doing any amound of planting out - drainage spades are perfect for digging neat holes for 2/3-7.5/10litre pots where little or no cultivation is needed or has already been done.
Cheers guys!
