I use gumtree to advertise my service, my firewood sales and any job vacancies i have. The latter two are very effective, i would estimate that about 60% of my firewood is sold through gumtree. Advertising vacancies on gumtree is also very effective and generates many replies (usually 30+ for a labourer position). However when advertising my services (landscaping, tree surgery, etc.) i only get a very small number of enquiries from it, i think this is down to sheer competition and the majority of companies advertsing on gumtree tending to be low end/budget types which i cant compete with in terms of price. Considering its free you might as well put an ad on, at the very least it will help your websites SEO, although i wouldnt consider paying for advertising on gumtree unless it was mandatory.
Well last year I advertised through Gumtree, and it probably worked out at half the work I got in, was through gumtree, i sometime paid to put it back to the top of the listings, just to give back to gumtree, but with new jobs coming through i would post new before and after shots.
I have found a couple of fraud advertisements though and I have alerted gumtree about these.
I certainly intend to advertise again this year though
