Gravel laying

Hi anyone !!I have a quote to do to lay weed membrane ready for the customer to lay decorative stones for a Japanese style garden. It is a lawned area about 4m x 9m and about 4'' high in grass/weeds.Should I just kill off the area with weed killer first or can you lay the membrane after just cutting ?Anyhow, that plus removing about 20 stuck in concrete slabs. How much I say including weed killer, membrane ( can you get this wholesale anywhere ? ) and my labour of course!!!Well done Stu on the extra work !!

  • If you use a decent quality woven polypropylene membrane you'll get away with just laying over closely mown/strimmed vegetation, without spraying. Weeds will not grow through it, tho you'll need to staple it tightly around the perimeter to make sure weeds don't find their way under the edge. Personally i dislike laying anything like type 1 because its just storing up a lot more work if the client decides to revert to a more conventional border later (when all the imported material will have to be taken out again).

Ground cover membrane, and ground staples for fixing it are available from all horticultural wholesalers - where in the country are you ?
  • try these guys online, they can supply smaller amounts than a 100m roll, and do weedkill before laying, 4" of grass, strim and clear first, down to the dirt with the strimmer, scalp it.

there are so many types and colours of stone on the market, have a good chat with the customer to see what look they were after.
i would not use type one either, you may want to plant through the membrane.
  • Thanks guys for the replies.

I am based down South so will need to find a wholesaler soon if things pick up.
  • Hi Sweetpea

weed kill the area first and leave for a couple of weeks

36 sqm area @70-80 mm deep gravel = 5.5 ton (approx), £ ........... depends on the gravel product your client requires

take a look at lotrak 1800 weed supressant, available in 45sqm handipacks or 450sqm rolls, Jewson, Travis Perkins, Bradfords, wickes etc

    Material£........

    Spoil and waste away £.............

    Fuel £..............

Labour£............. depends on whether you can loose tip the gravel straight on the area, or swing the dumpy bags over the area and split with stanley knife or wheel barrow gravel to desired area

Have fun with your gravel project

  • You need to know if the client is going to use the area as a walking/entertaining area before you decide whether type 1 is needed or not.

is this the type of garden you are thinking of,i typed in japanese gardens on google, then clicked images,

  • I'd spray with Roundup and wait a few weeks before laying the membrane. I've always bought woven weed fabric from ebay. Make sure it's at least 100gsm quality though. I prefer the woven fabric rather than the spun type as I find it drains better.

Type 1 underneath gravel is useful for areas which will be walked on, the gravel can be shallower and 'wackered' down and is therefore easier to walk on. With the Japanese theme, I would assume that most of the gravel won't be walked on at all.
  • Thanks again everyone for your further comments.Quote has gone so we shall see what happens.

Nice photo.Like Progard says, nice to see the plants featuring well.Quite often they look like a grave !
