there are so many types and colours of stone on the market, have a good chat with the customer to see what look they were after.
i would not use type one either,you may want to plant through the membrane.
I am based down South so will need to find a wholesaler soon if things pick up.

Type 1 underneath gravel is useful for areas which will be walked on, the gravel can be shallower and 'wackered' down and is therefore easier to walk on. With the Japanese theme, I would assume that most of the gravel won't be walked on at all.
