Most boxed stuff from garden centres I’ve found to be crap. I now go straight to turf growers/suppliers as their seed seems to germinate overnight!
I've found the LM2 from pitchcare to be pretty good. I'm trying out the designer brand this year, but only as it was on offer.
I think the thing to bear in mind most is to suit the seed to the useage and location of the lawn, be it needing a shade resilient mix, a tough ryegrass base for kiddies 'football lawn' or something fine and ornanmental for a feature lawn.
That's before you get into paddock seed of which there are many, many variations.
Theres a wide variety of different mixtures out there and i find the specialists are usually happy to advise on whats best for the location and the customer.
I used to buy "loose" seed from Wilkinsons............... you weighed it yourself into supplied paper bags from a big sack and they had a choice between "utility" and "fine" I used the "utility".....Always came up well and fairly cheap. In a hurry one day and just bought their prepacked seed in boxes instead..... actually cheaper........... excellent stuff as well..... germinated really well and quickly. Not bowling green grass........... excellent for your usual domestic lawns.
I agree wilkos do the most sales of birdcare in the whole country from the sheds and garden centres and with that shift a hell of a lot of grass seed
I personally buy general use ryegrass mix from a nursery in sealed 20kg bags and 10kg for shaded areas but most customers buy it from Wilko and the results are impressive. I guess they renew there stock regularly which helps a lot
going off thread but I’d say to anyone give the Wilkinson bolts and washers section a try. my mate got me on it and you basically pick and mix a bag with washers and other fixings for a set price per bag size. Screwfix are cheap for a box full but I’d sooner buy the bolt nut washer size that goes missing from mowers and stihl stuff rather than 20 sizes and only use two sizes and run out. I’m more picky with screws but when putting up straining wires etc on fruit walls you need various bolts washers nuts but lots of
sorry to go off thread but it is a cheap outlet and surprisingly a bit of a “ boys bits “ section
I’m an expert at filling up those pick ‘n mix bags up! I agree that they’re excellent value for nuts, bolts and washers. I am doing an ongoing job where I must have used 1000 vine eyes so far, I’d be in the shop every second week and take every vine eye they had in stock ( sorry others shoppers ! ), didn’t make a fortune of profit, but it’s nice knowing you’ve got a bargain.
Don't know with vine eyes but I usually find that if you're after very large quantities of things like that, Ebay usually works out the cheapest even with postage + you get it delivered too.
Like most things in life you pay for what you get. You can easily get grass seed for not a lot of money btu you have to accept that germination may be slow or non exsistent in some places. We sell both the 'Economy' seedbut major on the premium Limagrain seed which is treated with Headstart seed dressing. This is a nutrient coating which helps the seed to germinate far quicker and better than other products. This coating is available across all seed mixes and is nto actually any more expensive than Economy seed!

Hi Ollie, just thought I would mention that some of the images on your website don't correspond to the items for sale. I did contact your sales dept the other day, as I had a berthoud 2 boom sprayer attatchment on my order and what I recieved wasn't what I expected due to the images on the site. I only mention it as I notice the images are still wrong, and now I have the hassle of returning the item for refund.
The boxed stuff usually works out more pricey so perhaps you don't get what you pay for here!! The Wilko stuff is good though..... excellent germination and £4/kilo at the moment + excellent reviews....... about the same/cheaper than the large "commercial" bags.
