grass quiz

We operate an independent lawn care company in Notts. This year we have come up against Grain Thump on 2 occassions with startling results which I thought I would share as a fun quiz. Both lawns need a lot of attention, are full of moss, thatch , drainage issues etc.
Who can guess the treatment cost by them for the following lawns; one @ 769/m2 & one at 593/m2. There is no prize for the winner (who will not be the lawns owners thats for sure). The only clue I will give is dont think high. Good luck!

  • £50 each??? Or is that just stupid!

  • I reckon they will be carrying out 6 treatments at £30 per treatment

  • £14.99 per quarter?

I saw these chumps kicking snow off a lawn before scarifying it last week!!!
  • I've not known them charge less than a couple of hundred for a scarify on even the smallest lawns, let alone anything else needed over a year. And they leave the moss bagged-up for the client to take to the tip.

Even worse is their hollow-tine aeration service, where they leave the plugs to "break down and condition the soil". Think about it, if the heavy clay is the cause of the compaction, it's possibly not the best thing to smear all over the lawn!

I did complain to the owner of the franchise. Guess what? "We are not responsible for the individual actions of our franchisees". One of my real pet hates, and they're not even cheap!

All that may be true, but they have made it popular to have a nice lawn and to a certain extent have educated people on how to do it (You may not agree on how they do it)

Is it just chemical treatment, or are they scarifying and aerating etc ?

  • it will cost £50 and £40 just for the all in one fertilizer plus labor plus expenses plus profit.
if they are going to scarify it as well triple the above price and i have seen it before they do not lower the blades so as not to have to much to rake up and take away, some even leave the bin liners for the household to take away (cowboys) but folk just go on price saying its been fed and it will be OK

For those sizes, would assume their charges would be ~ £60 & £70ish respectively (2011-2012 prices in SE)

That would be for the weed and feed only Gary?
