Hi Ali,
For me it would come down to whether a Ginkgo is a suitable tree for that front garden. They can get quite high and if space is an issue then now's the time to suggest a more suitable replacement.If they would wish to keep it, then I would start with edging a good sized ring around the tree and mulch it with good compost or the like. I might make sure ithe compost was'nt too near the trunk.Then I would wait and see what it gives next year.
