Ginkgo Biloba - Damaged

HiI have a customer that has a Ginkgo Biloba in their front garden. However, it looks like the tree has been ringed by strimmer damage and due to this the trunk tapers in at the base. It has started to recover, and leaves are growing back. There were some branches but 2/3rds of their length were dead, so I have trimmed these back to the healthy parts. The tree basically looks a bit like a flagpole with a a couple of stunted branches half way up. What is the best thing to do here? I would guess the tree is about 12 - 14ft high and the branches are about midway, the advice I've seen is that they should not be topped - do I just continue to leave it and see if it will bounce back? They don't want to remove the tree. I was hoping to upload a photo but I can't see a way to do that.Any advice, greatly received.

  • Hi Ali,

For me it would come down to whether a Ginkgo is a suitable tree for that front garden. They can get quite high and if space is an issue then now's the time to suggest a more suitable replacement. If they would wish to keep it, then I would start with edging a good sized ring around the tree and mulch it with good compost or the like. I might make sure ithe compost was'nt too near the trunk. Then I would wait and see what it gives next year.
