Getting rid of Green Waste

Hello All,

I am new here and I would like to you know what fellow gardeners/landscapers do with there rubbish they produce as I am really struggling to find an answer for this. I have phoned a number of local waste companies, prices ranging from 110+vat to 127+vat per ton(which of course is hard to produce a ton worth of rubbish even with rubble so it would be a massive waste of money). Is that a good price to start of with? I am based in Cardiff. I do not really know how it all works as there does not seem to be companies who cater for this smaller loads. I would just buy an Estate car and use council places, but it looks really unprofessional. I normally use my clients garden bins for recycling the waste but sometimes need to take it with me. I would just like to know what fellow landscapers/gardeners do!

Any advice would be great!

Kind regards

Craig

  • Lots of threads on this. You need to bew licensed, or any proper trade waste site will turn you away, but for green waste only it's now free.

You need to find somewhere that does a cheaper minimum. Some council tips take trade, or there are green recycling sites springing up all the time. You have to factor travelling time into it as well, of course.

My tip is only £20 plus VAT for up to 1/2 tonne, and I wait until I have a trailer full before going. Obviously charge for waste as well, so you aren't losing out.

As mentioned, research the EA Waste Carriers license you need (may well be free if you really do ONLY dispose of green waste) and then use EA Website to search by location for waste disposal sites.

Some sites will take a multitude of waste and normally charge by weight with a min 'gate fee' which makes them expensive unless you generate a considerable amount. Better still, would be to find a dedicate green waste disposal site that then processes your waste on site and sell it as commercial product. These often charge by volume or van capacity and can be a 'cheaper' means of disposal.

The last point is that the EA website 'should' be the right place to look as if a site is not on their list, the chances are it is not a legit disposal point (unless they've 'just' registered as a waste managament company).

    I am totally staggered:

The irony of it - The government organisation (Environment Agency) that regulates waste and licensing is unable to list all the sites that accept waste (ie those that have a EA waste management / brokers license) since the end of Dec 2013.

I am missing something here ?

  • I think we need to put something together and complain to the EA.

I have had a waste licence now for two years and never been asked for it. Infact when I have gone to scrap yards they only want to see a driving licence or passport and wont except my waste licence.

What a mucking waste of money!!!!!

Best thing is if I dont have one I will be stopped every bloody time'
  • I think, to be fair to the EA, it's impossible for them to police every waste transfer site with their budget. I suppose that giving approval would mean more checks, and they can't do that to every site, so won't list anyone?

That said, they don't spend their money where it matters. The reason I needed a license for the first time was they camped outside the proper recycling site and clocked every van number. Why they weren't looking at the dodgy site opposite (literally opposite, they were parked in the farm's entrance!) I don't know, but perhaps the people who tip there aren't as "prosecutable"....

Coincidentally, I looked at this page this morning and was rather puzzled.

Perhaps if someone on here could compose a well worded template we could all use it to make a personal complaint/enquiry to the EA?

Maybe they will part refund my licence fee now I can't use that particular facility ;-)

are they saying that they (the EA) do not know who they have registered with themselves?
Unbelievable - especially with the records they insist I keep.

To be a Waste Carrier/Broker/Management company you need a License. Full stop.

If you have a license as a Waste "processor", you therefore are 'legit' by default, have the correct planning approval and have correct 'operational controls' in place. Therefore, also by default, they must 'know' everyone who has a license of some sort.

Why is it no longer possibly list them by town, post code so someone can enquire where there nearest licensed site is ? Or whether the guys at the door is truely a registered waste carrier?

Note that the "Duty of Care" now puts the onus on the 'waste owner' to ensure waste is correctly handled and disposed of BUT have just removed the only way you can check a contractor or waste site is legit!

There never has been any element of recommendation or policing from such a list, that is the job of the Inspectorate surely ?

I must be missing something here...

After seeing the way the Environment Agency has reacted to much of the flooding crisis I'm really not surprised that they can't get the policing of waste right.

The situation will only get worse if the proposed 1,700 jobs are axed
  • Surely in this electronic age it should simply be a case of the waste transfer stations that have filed all the correct documents online being recorded on an automated list. This is completely ridiculous. We, the contractors, need to jump through every hoop imaginable in order to stay above reproach and one of the main instigators pull away after they have our pennies in their coffers.

I will certainly be making a formal complaint. I would suggest all that have waste carriers licenses do the same.
