  • I think it depends on how good they want it and how quickly. I did one like this last year and just mowed it with my hayter a few times. Grass goes back to lawn very quickly in my experience. If the mower struggled I would strim it first. It looks fairly level under all that.

We'd strim first, or get the Countax ride on over it if access OK. Then start at highest mower setting and reduce each week to the desired height. Usually looks pretty good (relatively!) within a handfull of mows. Would also get some selective weed control down late march/early april, and a long lasting spring fert early march.

Would stipulate weekly cuts to start with until under control, then move to final timing, at most 14d.

  • Did a similar one 2 years ago and took about 5 cuts before it started looking anything like a half decent lawn, very clumpy and had to strim it first but by the end of the season It was fine, landlord delighted , just tell them it will take a while and not to expect overnight miracles. I picked up the neighbours even more neglected lawn last year.

Andrew and jon are right (obviously)about not going too short too quickly.

Strimmed it today and it looks way better already.. still lots of mounds to take out and a few holes to fill.   Should be able to get a mower through it next time.  Thanks for the replies.
