Gabion metal cages

Hi Guy's

I hope your all well and enjoying this years season.

I have a landscaping project at home and am thinking about using Gabion cages to retain a large soil bank in my garden.

My garden is split level and has a hight difference of say circa 14-16 foot in height. The bank needs something to make it more interesting although the bank is stable. I also have three large Oak's with TPO's attached so am keen to protect them.

Does anyone have any experience with Gabion cages and what rock is best used with them. I will upload a few images of the bank as it will be tricky due to the position of the Oak's.

Also keen to know the real cost of going with this option for retaining and any issues that arises.

Kind Regards

Simon

This is a picture of a site we worked on 9 years ago - although we only did the soft landscaping I hasten to add! We still maintain the site and the Gabions have worked a treat, with the planting maturing nicely. Originally it was a sloping bank to where the fence is in the picture. The gabions are filled with crushed and graded concrete/brick with a sandstone face. About a foot of soil was put in the middle terrace, with terram and a seep hose added for plug-in watering.

  • Thanks Colin,

That's exactly the sort of look I want to create.

  • I have worked with Gabions a few times to retain banks on rivers, railways and gardens.. I have always worked in a similar fashion to colin where possible.. I've seen people just throwing the stone in before and the result is no way near as good as if you Spend a little bit of time placing the stone in and organising it.

  • Nice site Colin.

As always....lawns, gabions, sleepers....the list goes on - use quality materials and take the time to properly prepare whatever needs to be done.

I'm laying turf in the morning.....preparation is everything.....must be on my mind lol.

    Cheers, Eugene

  • Started to measure up for this project and am using the above supplied image as my blueprint.

  • hi,

only ever did one job with gabions & it was about 7 years ago & to this date they are still bang on as each stone was individually placed & tamped in . Its hard going but worth it

  • Thanks,

Ill try and upload a few images of the bank tomorrow. I just cant decide the best stone to use for the face.

    This is my project,

It's a large one and if anyone has any suggestions please shout as we are open to suggestions and advice.

The lower part of the garden is having a machine come in and level it. then a summer house, pizza oven, BBQ and children's climbing frame will be installed over grass. Just behind the furthest Oak tree will be an Oak sleeper wall about 4 x high. Then the ground will be levelled and barked. That will lead onto the proposed Gabions that will allow me to back fill and extend out the top part of the garden.

A huge project for me, but I'm very exited.

  • Hi Simon,

I wrote these LJN pages a few years ago on Gabions and filling stone may help.

Would probably use alternative suppliers now like LandscapePlus.com for the gabions...

  • Thanks Craig, that's awesome!
