Foot attire

I am currently wearing a pair of Zamberlan one piece leather/goretex walking boots for most jobs, mainly because I already had them and they are very comfortable.
I am looking at replacing them now. What do most people wear on their feet most of the time? I am 50% on my knees weeding and the other 50% pushing a mower or on a small ride on.

I have a pair of Dewalt boots with composite toecaps so I don't have to take my shoes off when I go through security at Heathrow!

Nice and comfy, cost around £60 from memory.

  • I have thease Hiax boots propper good http://www.brixworkwear.co.uk/safety-shoes-boots/feature/airpower-a...

I struggle to find decent boots that last. I now buy cheap boots every 6 months. The main problem I have is the boots splitting along the crease when kneeling down when weeding etc. Has anyone found boots that don't have this problem ? This is mainly aimed at the maintenance guys as it's the kneeling down that does it !

  • Great subject, I need new boots and cant find any comfortable ones.
Best boots I have are some old Stihl chainsaw boots but these are too hot and heavy to wear mowing!

I am only getting about 3 months from boots, the lace hooks break off and I find the toe caps too narrow. If anyone can advise on a wide toecap please.
Also really need a half size.

Have resorted to wearing walking boots without toe caps!

  • Think I'll stick with walking boots without steelies too. There's no requiement for me to wear steelies is there? I work on my own.

I use Buckler B500 work boots - steel toe cap and steel mid sole too (so protects your foot from any old nails in timber etc).

They are the best boots I have ever had - I am on my third pair now. Last about 8-9 months for around £60, which considering I am generally wearing either the Buckler B500 boots, my Buckler wellies or my horse riding jodphur boots and rarely anything else, its not bad really.

Never had a pair split or break or malfunction in any way, I purely and simply wear them till the sole is worn flat and they don't have any grip any more.

I would never NOT wear steel toe cap boots whilst working, as having dropped all manner of things on my toes and watched them bounce off instead of having smashed and broken toes, I have always been thankful for the toe caps! Besides of which most (if not all) commercial sites will insist on steel toe cap boots, Hi Viz etc to be worn whilst working...

I wear leather Dunlop steel toe cap safety boots. £22 from Sports Direct (who have a good line in safety gear generally - it's good branded stuff but line end prices). Get through a couple of pairs a year. They are decent, nothing fancy but do the job. I agree that I would never consider not wearing steel toe caps. Not worth the risk. (Also safety boots have no VAT so often cheaper for what you get than walking boots or equivalent).

I have big wide feet, size 12, I bought a pair of dewalt challengers which are amply wide enough and I can wear nice thick thermal socks in the winter and walking socks in the summer (you know the type that stop your feet sweating)

Bought them through Amazon on offer. I have tried several different steel toe capped boots and these are by far the best. All the others I have tried are to hot, don't breath, not waterproof, too tight across the toes etc etc. as a result I had sore feet which makes for a really unpleasant day.

Although not cheap these boots are well worth the money as I now have comfy dry feet which are safe as they have toe caps and reinforced soles.

Having once, some time ago, slipped on a bank and my foot slipped under a working flymo, it chopped off the top of my boot over the toecap. So no toecap would have resulted in no toes. I now always wear steelies as you never know what is going to happen or when!

The new Buckler Waterproof for me http://www.bucklerboots.com/categories/workitwaterproof.php
I used to have the older thick leather bucklers, but these new ones are much lighter and really comfortable.

There are no absolute laws that I am aware of saying you have to wear steel toecaps BUT I suspect that under the Personal Protective Equipment guidelines and HSE recommendations you may find that, heaven forbid, should you have an accident the HSE, your insurance or your customers would not look on you favourably.

Personally I'll spend some money on decent boots rather than risk losing a foot. However your call.
