Flying Transit

My brother borrowed my van yesterday, for a late night Ikea visit

it had been running just fine and then ooopps, cuts out and wont restart

was quite surreal seeing a van slowing floating upwards, used to seeing cars recovered like this but altogether more nerve wracking when its your own van! Plus the fact the road was a busy bus route and over hanging trees to contend with :-o

  • Sorry to hear that Anthony. Any idea what's wrong with it? How long is it out of action for?
  • Dont go to IKEA :)

That usually happens when you park on double-yellow in London :)

Nice van -hope you get it sorted ... probably something simple ...

  • Recovery guy thought it might be an air lock in the fuel line, but we could find nor smell any fuel, the guy was no mechanic anyway, just a truck driver really.

Have it booked in for next Tuesday, with the garage i normally use as they also hire vans and run a fleet of transits themselves. Could get it done elsewhere quicker, but would rather wait for people that work on them most days, just thankful its happened while im not that busy.

  • Quick update,

having a remanufactured engine fitted on Monday, £1600 all in with 12 month warranty, all major parts are either replaced with new or machined originals if possible, new timing chain and guides, new seals, gaskets etc.
Although the old engine apparently (im not so sure now!) had a full service history, it has currently done 131,000 miles but i know if they are serviced properly then 200,000 should be no problem, maybe i have just been unlucky. Although i have since found out that this issue is not as uncommon as you might think, for Transits anyway, much like gearbox issues on Vivaros!

It appears something has gone awry with the timing chain and fortunately didnt completely destroy the engine but has caused enough damage to the cylinder head and possible a piston or two, to make it easier and in fact cheaper to replace rather than repair.

  • Was the timing chain replaced at 100k miles? Thats the interval for them, sounds like it may have just snapped!

  • The service history is minimal, as its basically just a printout from the previous fleet owner, showing when work was carried out and dates, without any specifics. The service book has corresponding stamps with mileage, but i have no paper work detailing what has actually been done. I suspect that although everything else appears to be in order, the timing chain may well of not been done, i dont believe from what Ford have said that the chain has actually snapped but rather has been running slack and has jumped a tooth or two on the crankshaft or cam cogs!

  • Sorry to hear that Anthony. How long will the van be out of action?
How have you managed with work whilst the van has been out of commission?
The van we owned before our current one was owned by a rental company and was riddled with problems, and againm service history was minimal.
    Hope you get sorted asap

  • Hi Steve

I hired a van for a day to service my contract jobs, not much to do because of the cold weather though, probably could of got away with not going to be honest and saving the money. Have been out doing some quotes, but obviously had to use the car.

Should have the van back Thursday, fingers crossed!
