Floodlights

Hi,

Not one for getting up early to catch the morning light I wondered if it would be possible to work by artificial light. I found there were a number of portable floodlights on Amazon but didn't like the idea of having to remember to charge them every day with the charge only lasting about three hours.  The cheaper ones can't be worked from mains while in use and also they were relatively low power compared to the wall mounted ones. Eventually I bought a low wattage but highish luminance LED wall light and I connected the very short wire to a length of orange cable via a three pin connector then mounted it on a piece of wood as a base. I've used it a few times now and have been impressed as it allows me to continue jobs such as weeding when the light fails at this time of the year. I am interested if anybody else does anything similar and what your experiences are.

Screwfix do a small portable 10w led floodlight for £30 failing that buy a lenser head torch or a dewalt torch and battery
  • This must be one of the most insane ideas I've heard of..... hopefully, you're joking!!  Can't you just get up a bit earlier or do less work? I see you're down as a cycling gardener.............. perhaps you could just use the bike front light to do the work by....  not sure you'll have room for floodlights in your bike trailer:) Seriously, if you charged a bit more  than your £9/hour on your website, you wouldn't have to work in the dark!!

      • I use my Petzl head torch when it gets dark or gloomy every autumn and winter Geoff. Just like putting on a jacket when it starts raining. Flexibility all the way!

    • Yeh, I thought it was a strange idea but it works! Luckily the trailer is quite commodious so no problem with the logistics side of things. The customers don't know it yet but next year the charge is going up to £10 ph in line with this area's going rate. I've been using an old Petzl head torch but it's pants so I've ordered a new LED light.

Just out of curiosity have you ever sat down and worked out exactly how much you earn after expenses i.e. Tax, NI cont, insurances, servicing and replacement of tools, bike parts, trailer parts, mobile phone etc etc, on 10 per hour you can't walk away with much, even less than min wage ????

Btw , for the record I love the idea of the bike, you can't go much greener loving than that...;-)
        • This area has to be one of the cheapest places in the country in which to live plus we don't have a car or take overseas hols. All earnings go through the books and by using a gov green incentive I can claim back 20p per mile from HM inland revenue which is handy. I am insured.  Plenty of custom around here and still fully booked. No time wasting trips to the tip or a fuel using vehicle to run. The local  gardeners that run vans can charge anything from £15 to £30 ph but the (mainly retired) folks around here won't pay which means said van users have to chase the bigger contract jobs or one off tree work/fencing jobs etc which is more construction than gardening. There can't be much left to live off when you factor the cost of running a van or employing staff (even if they are paid min wage)?
