What do Designers feel about this approach ?
"Our team will design everything around you: your preferences, your style and your budget. Complete makeovers for small gardens start from around £20,000 for the total design and build, however we do offer design only service should you prefer. An Outline Plan for a typical urban garden will start from around only £1200. We’re flexible, and happy to work with you to find the best solution for your garden project.
How it works:
1) Call us to book an initial 1 hour design consultation to take place before the end of September. A fee of £96 (inc VAT)* will be payable and for this you get great advice on the potential for your garden design, together with an idea of the costs to build your perfect garden.
2) Included in the cost of the consultation, we will follow up with a written Design Brief. This will outline the features to be included, contain style comments and detail any functional issues to be taken into account.
3) Accompanying the Design Brief will be a fixed fee Design Proposal (this will include your 20% reduction on design fees).
4) Book your design work with us by the end of October to receive the discount.

This is more or less how we ran our company and over a 15 year period designed around 1000 gardens on this basis.
I found clients very nervous about open-ended fees and we had a clear price list detailing the cost of their design.
And we always charged for visits.
Blimey! I'm all for transparency in garden design fees and I quote for garden design projects individually in a flexible fixed fee approach so that that clients know what the design fees will be according to their individual needs/scope of project ahead of the landscaping quotes. But this sales pitch email has made me wonder if I am undercharging...it would be interesting to find out more. Perhaps we could move this to the Hub, Gary, if people are interested in discussing garden design fees and charging structures?
