First Aid for a damaged Cherry Tree

A client has had a flowering cherry tree damaged by a car/delivery van which has resulted in a large piece of bark being scraped off the trunk. Its not been barked (..there is 2/3rd of the bark circumference left). It's gone thru to green wood.

What can be done to protect the 'wound' ?

I remember you used to be able to buy a 'band' thta you strapped on like a plaster or a 'paste' that is applied and goes hard to create a new protective skin.

Is this still the current way of thinking? Should I do anything at all ?

  • If the removed  bark is still on hand and usable, advice is to clean it up and fix it back on with some tape or rope, where it can grow back on after some months;

    Not something Ive tried (yet) but bridge grafts can be carried out? for example http://www.barcelmill.com/bridgegrafting.htm

    Either way the torn bark should be cleaned up with a pruning knife to aid healing (ie a clean line, not a jagged tear). Wound paints/sealants aren’t generally recommended now, the trees own natural recovery should be encouraged, though being a cherry some may disagree?
