Fence Treatment work

Hi all

I'm just starting out in my gardening/handyman business. Yesterday I did a hedge cut job for a new client (recommend via someone I know).

Client asked me to quote on staining the fences. It's quite a longish run, most 6ft high and around 120ft in linear lenght. One side of the boundary is several years old and never previously treated but looks sound, the other side is 1 year old not treated.

I'm sat here trying to work out how to cost this job out. I know it'll be based on day rate but there are more factors than just my time.

Should I quote to do both sides (sounds silly to ask it) I have not found out about access to the one side it's fixed in place , the other side (1 year old) is easy to slide out as it's panels in slotted concrete posts, if access is tricky.

Do I bush apply or spray - do I need any licence to spray fence stain? If spraying the best option what type of sprayer would people suggest.

I'm thinking that I will have to brush down the fence prior to staining to remove dust and crud. I plan to use pro products - Sadolin or similar and have advised her that I will only use quality products. And she'll need it re-doig in 2-3 years time, if not sooner as it's quite exposed.

The client is looking to sell property in a year or so, this project is an attempt to visually improve the property before placing on the market.

I also have other painting works such as facias and gararge do to do, remove an old delapidated porch roof etc so I'm quite keen to get this job as it'll give me about a weeks work. I've also had neighbours take my cards yesterday so the chance for more work in the locality is good if I do a proper job.

Thank you for any advice.

Paul

I use a back pack sprayer, but if using for example creosote it will need vitron seals as it just eats the rubber seals. You can do many panels very quick using this method.

    • Thnaks Dave, I don't think I'll be using Creosote, but noted about the seals.

  • Price the job on a day rate +the cost of the stain ,and make a allowance for another man , as 6x6 ft fence panels can be hard work to lift in and out alone .

Apply the stain useing a sprayer either a bottle or backpack. You don't need a licence and use a stiff brush to clean the panels before hand .

Find out colour stain the customer wants as thee is a range of colours available .

    Hi Paul

We recently painted 235m of double slatted vertical hit/miss style fence with a Wagner paint sprayer we bought from Screwfix. Spent around £350 on it and it was so easy.

As always, the prep work is the key. Get the fence clean, the nature of our fence meant it was imperative to staple traps along the other side. We also manually painted the top 100mm of both sides of the fence as well as the actual top - this allowed us to control the paint spray in a downward fashion when doing the top (hope that makes sense).

We used professional Johnstone’s Leyland Paint which the sprayer takes up straight from the can.

Once prepped and tops painted I sprayed 20m per hour including touching up with small roller where required, moving tarps, changing tins etc. Minimal breaks were had because the sprayer would clog up.

235m (100m each side plus extra). We charged £3300.
