coach bolts?
As John says, coach bolts...................... they're the ones with the nut/washer at the end. You might though be referring to "coach screws".................. these will screw into the wood rather than going all the way through fitting a nut/washer.

I always reckon they look hideous though............ I have used them occasionally but painted them with brown Hammerite.
Can't argue with that, but for many the convenience and cost out ways the less than aesthetic looks
