Etesia Hydro 80 failing to start

Hi all,

Long time lurker new but new member.

I bought a second hand Hydro 80 which I've been using for 2 seasons now. It's been laid up over winter and now fails to start.

Model is Hydro 80 MHHP - V twin honda engine.

I've got handbrake on, pedals level, blade off and sitting on the seat and when I click the key round to start, all that happens is the relay on the right in front of the battery clicks once and that's it.

I've checked the handbrake, seat and pedal switches for continuity and all check out.
Fuses OK
It has a brand new battery showing 13+ volts
When using a meter, the big red power cable to starter solenoid shows 13v with key off, and this drops to zero as soon as ignition is put on, the trigger cable doesn't register any voltage at all when turning the key

Getting pretty desperate if anyone has any helpful pointers or happens to have a wiring diagram for the MHHP specifically

Any help much appreciated!

Was any fuel left in over winter Henry ?

  • Hi John, thanks for replying, a little bit of ethanol free fuel was left in. Sorry maybe I wasn't so clear in my original message, but it doesn't even try and crank, just get that single highlighted solenoid click and nothing from the starter solenoid at all

    • Hi Henry - Sounds like the starter motor is trying to turn the engine over but it has jammed. You could try freeing it off by rocking the machine backwards and forwards. It may work. Did for me on an Etesia 124. Good luck.

You could try tapping the starter motor with a mallet while.ctlramking it over.

  • I'm still learning, but my thinking was that if there is no 12v going to the trigger wire when turning the key to try and start then there is an issue elsewhere in the electrics? Also seems weird that the 12v drops to zero on the main power feed to the starter solenoid when the ignition is switched on

    • could it be the starter solenoid itself gone bad

      • I did wonder that but it's not getting 12v at all on the trigger wire, so I don't think it's being "asked" to energise

I'm no expert on ride ons. The first I go for on engines is the spark plug. Then the the carb, then air filter, then flywheel.

The discussion or wiring diagrams within It might help you.

    • That's really helpful, although I haven't replaced my loom it does sound like a very similar issue and gives me a few things to try
