Etesia 46 Pro recoil spring shenanigans

Finally got round to changing the air filter, spark plug, oil and adjusting/oiling the cables.

Also decided to change the starter cord, what fun that was!

The cord was pretty dirty and starting to wear at the handle end as well as where it passes into the starter assembly. Took everything apart and as i did so i dislodged the recoil spring, when i came to put it back together, trying to wind up a greasy, slippery spring while simaltaneously trying to stop it from flexing side ways and turning into a 'slinky' was trying to say the least!

Took 6 attempts to get it back into its housing without it turning into spaghetti, my fingers were starting to get cramp because of constantly having to grip it firmly while pulling it tight enough to shrink it enough to fit the housing.... joy!... :-{

I was starting to think there must be an easier way

Have i been a numpty or is it a right of passage for doing home servicing?......

    hi anthony

    to be honest with out trying to pin the spring in place with a thin but wide chisle when taking that section apart its 50/50 if its going to ping off or not, the best thing i always do when we have a new mower out and even if its set up the same as another machine is always have the parts diagrames to hand because even the most simple of tasks can be complicated by that 1 screew you didnt know was put there or the pin that hooks the spring on pull starts makeing it ping out into a huge tangled mess, atleast next time you know what you could be in for and if the spring comes of again what i normaly do is use any cylinder which is the same diamiter the middle of the spring should be, cut 2 pices of wood with that dieamiter circle in the middle and a small hole drilled in to slip a pin trough to hold the spring wire while sandwiched between the 2 pices of wood and just wind it up remover one pice of wood and it should be all wound up ready to slip into the pull start houseing

  • I like your thinking, will be bookmarking this post for future reference
