Estimating to restore beneath artificial turf ?

I have had a request to provide an estimate to remove an area of artificial turf and create a U shaped flower bed .

Problem is i need to remove the artificial turf to see what its laid on and may have to remove in terms of sub base material and then what to supply in terms of top soil / compost to create a viable flower bed .

I have never laid artificial turf so not sure what its laid on , but i understand it could be crushed rock / sand etc .

Obviously i can't just pull up the artificial turf to look underneath as its just the estimate stage it will mean having to peg it down again and it may cause some damage .

Question 1 what can you expect to find underneath artificial turf and what is the best way of calculating a realistic price in an area you can't inspect i.e to remove and supply or is it the type of material that can be incorporated in a flower bed or does any sand used contain weed suppressant chemicals  ?

Question 2 How do you dispose of artificial turf responsibly or does it carry any imaginative recycle value ?

Thanks in Advance .

  • i would expect to find sand under it try using somthing like a meat skewew as a probe

the soil underneath will be in poor condishion so will need some manure dug in that may requier some of the old stuf to be removed

i dont think artificial turf is recycable

Thanks David I have now got the go ahead to remove the artificial grass so see what lays beneath , Its a new build that has being hard landscaped to high standards so i am hoping they did some thorough prep and not left a multitude of sins beneath the artificial grass .

Currently no planting areas which might suggest the soil was unviable , i know the area is built on heavy clay but at least now i can have a proper look .

      • I can't add anything sorry but that's the most heartwarming thread title I've seen for some time, somebody getting rid of that horrible stuff.

Best to have a look underneath. Its normally sand, type one and membrane. Sometimes crushed granite.

What you gonna do with the landfill fake grass? I was thinking it would make a nice rug!🤣

    • re-use it on another job or sell on ebay for local collection lol. I predict the artificial lawn craze will end up like avocado bathroom suites, that future generations will laugh at in a slightly horrified manner

Interesting just checking out Gary's dicussion what happens to artificial turf at end of life .

'' Used as a surface for cows to walk on '' still creates a problem , what happens to artifical turf once the cows have finished walking on it ?

It will probably end up covering the surface of mars for future generations to endure .

        • land fill , as after those cows have done their business on it nobody would want to touch it surely. To be fair a lot of other stuff ends up in land fill i suppose
