Estimating green waste costs

So someone's put me on to a local commercial tip - and they charge based upon weight.

Whats the best way to price this? As different jobs will produce more/less waste, and I have no means of weighing bulk bags of waste.

Do you include your time at your full rates to go drop it off?

  • Trial and error I guess? Is there any room for negotiation? I have agreed a price with my green waste site per bulk bag of rubbish as I have a panel van and that's how I deal with rubbish.

Yes you need to include your time to the tip, it's all part of the job. How you do it is up to you. I include it in the cost of the rubbish disposal rather than making a separate cost of it.

Fortunately I have a bit of space at home so can stack a few bags out of the way. I charge the customer a x amount more than it costs me to dump, so when I have 4/5 bags it's a profitable trip. Just means a bit of double handling of the bags.

It’s a perennial problem - some sites charge by weight with a minimum ‘gate’ price, others charge by volume.

We have access to both types of site, so we choose depending on what the green waste is ( which is why chip/shred a lot of our waste).

Suggest you never take grass in by weigh-station ;)

If you monitor your WTN you should start to see a pattern of quantity vs costs to help future price ups.

We charge the associated labour & travel and after too many years of doing it, for an inclusive price we know the % ratio.

For one offs etc we charge a fixed price for each 1000l bags - again this covers labour etc

    Hope that helps ...

    • How much does everyone pay for waste,

i get charged £108 for half a ton

      • As mentioned above I do it by the bag full but that seems quite a bit

I don't know how it equates in weight but I'm paying £6 incl vat per bulk bag.

        A couple of comments;

        - are you using one of the large waste companies (Suez, Viola, re3 etc )?

        - check your WTN’s EWC codes

To me that sounds like general / mixed waste charges.

‘Clean’ Green waste should be ‘recycled’ and does does not attract land fill tax.

If coded correctly at weighbridge i’d expect ~£60-70 per tonne with a min 400-500kg gate cost.

        • Last year I was paying £58 per load upto 500kg this year it almost doubled £108

I only use it now for large waste jobs ie trees and fencing as I have a arrangement for green waste with a local farmer who I pay £35 per month for unlimited green waste

      • For Green waste at £108 per ton is being overcharged. For green waste you should be looking being charged from the recycleing centre approximatley £65 per ton with a minumum of £15-20 charge.

If you have the means od storing the heavy logs for fire wood all the better for you cost.

I can fill a flat bed with most branhces tied down quite high for £25-£30 waste cost.

Time is always included. Most places have a minimum fee - in our sites case this is half a ton. Our weighbridge tickets generally average between 650 and 1500 kg on a fortnights 'mixed maintenance' - we cut quite a lot of grass though - one average filling 4-5 bulk bags a day with just the grass throughout the season.
