  • Thanks Robin for the discussion post.  Leylandii are always a wonderful contraversial subject with our customers, friends and family - love or hate these trees IMO they still make one of the very best hedges and are as popular as ever.

The BBC article shows why people hate them - when they grow out of control and have never been pruned.    I have a friend who did successfully manage to take up a claim via the Council against a neighbour who refused to prune his leylandii hedge.  When he still refused to prune after the case this neighbour had an Anti-social behaviour order made against him!  Now he keeps it pruned to a reasonable height.

We sell lots of Leylandii and I know people who planted leylandii hedges in their garden over 30 years ago and the hedges are always kept at 6-7ft, neatly pruned, thick and still very green.  Obviously it is a bit more maintenance then planting shrubs as a hedge but the privacy gained from Leylandii (when properly maintained) is excellent.  We find that some customers decide to hate them before they look at other hedging and then realise that they are the best option in many circumstances (fastest growth/ excellent windbreak /best privacy as incredibly dense / best price for height).  Also some customers want over 5m height hedging and this is difficult to source at a reasonable prices as shrubs.

It really is not the Leylandii which should have the bad reputation but the owner who allows the plant to grow out of control and refuses to put in the effort to keep it looking good. (Karen)

spot on facts above, i planted one (4 left now , as smaller 'golden crest in between died of mostly) for all the above reasons .- its a lovely dark green hedge , thick and healthy , very private for the area i want but kept well cut at 6ft and trimmed all round as its in the middle of my land.
