      "in June we get the "simmer dim" where the sun skirts along just below the horizon for a couple of hours and it's dusk for an hour or two but never dark. "

      That sounds cool (although I think I'd get cabin fever in an Orkney winter:)

      I've never been that far north but I once watched dolphins in the Moray Firth at midnight, in a strange dusk. 

      A very special, but surreal, experience.
