Employing someone

Hi all,

I desperately need some full time help maintaining school grounds and building playgrounds in schools, but after a pretty traumatic experience with an apprentice this year, I'm really nervous about employing someone, and need some advice/kick up the backside to get on with finding someone or I'll work myself to an early grave.
I really don't enjoy the man-management side of things, would much prefer to be left to my own devices. But that's no longer an option - more and bigger projects, (which I love doing and have worked damn hard to achieve), and a wife who keeps churning out the designs faster than i can build them, means I've got to man-up and move on. How do others cope, adjust to being a boss? How (on earth) do you find a good worker that you'd be happy to spend 12 hours a day in the company of? I'm prepared to offer a good package to the right person, but any tips on how to keep them motivated. General words of encouragement needed.

Thanks,
Doug.

  • Try putting a job vacancy card in your local Polish Delicatessen. Many of the patrons of these stores make excellent work colleagues. Keep them motivated by showing you care about their career as well as your own (putting them through spraying/trailer licence etc) and when you stop at the shop for a chocolate bar buy them one as well.
