Break his tasks down into simple, quantifiable, measurable tasks or chunks.

Ensure he understands them and set him goals to achieve Task 1 by 'x' o'clock etc, etc

Initially; check back regularly and see how he is progressing and give further guidance, support & positive feedback.

You need to understand if he is a "Won't do" or a "Can't do"

The first one gives you a great problem. The second one gives the opportunity to guide and educate.

Remember, some people can not see the whole picture and 'freak' when given a huge work-order or set of instructions. Broken down into chunks, it becomes manageable

  • i completely agree with gary!! great answer

  • The first thing to remember is that NOBODY works like you, and you are dead right Gary re work load. Some like a list as long as their arm and it will motivate them. Others will panic and run round in circles, because they have no work/time perspective, yet both could be equally good at their job.......over to you Mr. Manager!

  • put another man with them - then they will compete :)

  • Or they will toss it of together.

I had a guy I knew ask me for some part time work, I think he though they'd be a little weeding some grass cutting etc. We had a job to dig out a plot of land so the area could be block paved, He worked well, but then couldn't move for 2 days & said he doesn't want anymore work. If I'd not been working with him, & employed a second labourer to work there, I think the job would of gone badly & not of been finished.
