Electricity Sub Stations

I have a customer who has a small electricity sub station adjacent to their property . There are some Hawthorns on their side which over hang the sub station , The hawthorns are about 16 - 20 feet tall .

They want the hawthorns cut back , normally no problem but in view of the risk of branches and debris falling into the sub station I have said that I dont want to do this work .

Does anyone know the correct protocol and procedures to follow to get this work done

Thanks Charlie

  • I would have thought the best bet would  be to contact the people responsible for the substation and I'm sure they'll have the answers. ....Isn't there usually a phone number on the substation that can be used?  Reckon you've made the right decision in turning down the job.............. there's much easier ways to make a living.............. branches could drop inside, the substation has to be shut-down to retrieve them and you get the bill!!!

  • Agree with Graham, if you cant guarantee that branches will not fall into sub-station, leave well aone.  Or get a tree surgeon in.

It raises the question how / who did the work in the past ?

Sounds like the hawthorn may have being planted as defensive hedging to engulf the sub station i wouldn't get involved .

  • Thanks for the advice as stated I m not going to do this job . My customer will have to contact SSE and speak with them

    Thanks

    • electricity company most likely do it for free

Agreeed with Billybop. We had a similar situation with vegetation and the sub-station fencing. We contacted the supply company and it was all done in blindingly fast time and for free.

Don't be put under pressure by a Client to do anyting you feel uncomfortable about.

Only 'Certified / Competent' persons can enter a Substation with UK Power Network approval. Never, ever poke anything through or lean into a Substation as HV has the ability to 'jump' and electrocute you.

You can call them and normally they prefer to deal with any issues, often FoC.
