I was hoping one of you Ego users may be able to help me. I recently bought a 2.5ah battery with the new style gauge - the older ones are pants, as you probably know - however, there appears to be an odd quirk to them... When using a tool, the battery gauge will be lit up with a number of segments, 5/5, 4/5, 3/5 etc. it will stay illuminated for about 5 seconds after the trigger is released. But, when I press the gauge button, a different number of segments is illuminated! When the battery is freshly charged, the gauge will show 5/5 both times, but as the battery fades, the gauge will show 5/5 in use and then 3/5 when checked; 4/5 in use and 2/5 when checked etc. until the battery is dead. Just before the battery dies the gauge is showing 3/5 segments lit when in use.
I hope that waffle makes sense! Would someone be kind enough to check if theirs does the same?
I've tried the battery in different tools and get the same results. Oh, and this is the second battery, as I took the first back straight away as I considered it a fault!
Thank you.

hi I only use mine in a blower and strimmer so don't ever see how they light up during use, due to the position of the battery relative to my field of view whilst operating these tools. Maybe best to ignore the lights during operation and just press the button to check how much is left. I think these are basically a volt meter so a few seconds after use the voltage will recover slightly so you can gain an extra bar from when the pack is under load
It's a minor issue, I know, but I bought the lighter 2.5ah specifically for the hedge cutter and it's nice to have a quick look down to see what sort of time I've got left. Seems more like a crappy design to me, the Stihl tools seem to do it ok, the Dewalt tools are fine too. I'm going to send Ego an email and tell them to sort their sh+t out! Or something along those lines!
without pressing the button, the Stihl's only show how much power is left when you are down to the last flashing light, to be fair
My memory is not what it used to be ! They all suffer then! It's not the end of the world, it's just when one is flat-out hedge cutting it's nice to have a quick glance down and have a look at what's left in the tank, rather than having to wait to press.
I'm going to have to learn to just look at what the gauge shows and minus a segment or two!
2.5ah is loads nicer to use, would poss add another to my kit if I wasn't thinking of trying something else. Good luck with contacting Ego, still waiting on a response from them to replace the faulty replacement battery they sent me.
yes definitely best to use the 2.5ah in the hedge trimmer due to less weigh/bulk than the higher capacity packs. I sold my Ego trimmer as I was too used to the Stihl's to get on with it. I use my 2.5's on the strimmer although they don't last long. In the 5800 Ego blower you need a 5ah really and in the 6500 blower a 7.5ah otherwise it doesn't quite reach its full potential, especially in Turbo mode
Yes, the 2.5ah is far nicer in the hedge cutters. I've got two older 4ah batteries and they're still going strong and will pretty much do the day hedge cutting. A client has Ego gear and has two of the newer style batteries in his shed which no longer work, they look almost brand new! He bought them from Ego directly and he said they're very slow to respond.
I've got one old style 5a.h battery and four with the guage. The old style one seemed to be the best performing one up until recently. Now none of my batteries are reliable enough to get through the whole day without coming up short! A little annoyed by it to be fair as I've invested heavily in Ego kit. Like Billy says though, just click them in and use what you can out of them. The guage has a life of it's own most of the time. I can have full guage before I click in, five minutes different matter.
I would love one of the new 10ah battery packs for my blower but they are crazy expensive !
I noticed today that the battery gauge on one of my 2.5ah batteries was all over the place. A freshly charged battery stopped dead in my hedgetrimmer and only had one light illuminated but had more lights when pressed. I reinstalled the battery and it went back up to 5 lights again. There was definitely a difference in between the lights illuminated in use and when manually checked. I'm hoping its not on its way out already.
I have had two batteries die recently, one being a fairly new one, the first battery I ever bought is still going! The major problem i have had with EGO directly is their slow response, I have been considering changing brands but then I have notcied a few people moving over to EGO due to problems with their Stihl and Husqvarna battery tools. My blower and strimmer are pretty worn out now so i'll have to make a decision soon!
