Efflorescence?

Hi all

We had a new honed smooth Indian sandstone patio layed. After around a week, we noticed blotches on some of the slabs. Is the just the salts and minerials coming through or something else?

Someone mentioned this usually happens if they haven't been laid on a full bed, however they have. Also you'll notice that not all slabs are effected.

  • Full bed is important for stability and prevents frost damage but efflorescence is usually caused when SBR primer hasn't been used on the back of the flag.

    • Thanks Tom. Any ideas what it might be? I've never come across it before. Could it be the actual slabs?

      • Not sure what causes it.  I think it's maybe the mortar sucking moisture out of the slabs as it goes off.  I have seen it before on Indian stone paving.  Looks quite bad in the images you have posted though.  Maybe see what the supplier says.
