Edging for a lawn

Any recommendations for edging materials for a lawn. The brief is to give a nice clean edge to the turf going down to separate the turf and white spar type chippings.I've seen some metal edging that clips together with spikes attached to the bottom. Thought about round top/driveway edging but this would need to go down on a mortar base. It’s about a 8m run each side.Any othe ideas ?

  • The metal edging is made by a company called ' EverEdge' it's a great product for both lawn and gravel edging, details can be found at Everedge.

    Hope this of some help.

  • I prefer pavers (tegula deco, brett regatta, granite setts - 50mm or cubes etc.) laid onto haunched concrete to flexible edging as it gives a nice edge to run your mower wheel over. It's an easy installation too.

The Ever-edge type of products look neat and last well.

Also try brick edging, yes go down on a bed of mortar but will look good as a contrast to the green of grass.

I would steer clear of the wooden log rolls, they do not last long and do not like strimmers going against.

You do not say what the edging is for, is it just to edge a lawn for aesthetics, is it to retain the lawn? I sit to hold back soil or gravel?

The Log Roll effect was a none starter anyway.

Its to seperate the White spar chippings from the lawn. To help stop the soil and the grass from staining the stone, maybe ?

It is to retain the lawn in the sense that a little top soil has to go down before the turf but the level of the stone chippings should be nearly the same height as the lawn. So should hold each other apart.

I will quote using the everedge, if it turns out to be too high I will look at other methods. Although I would think that other methods maybe need more time to fit.
  • Hi there,

I use the strimmer resistant lawn edging,
when it is install you can not say the different between that one and the everedge lawn edging but:
    - It will last longer
-It cost far less (about 1-2 pounds a metre)
    -easy to cut

I used it for 7 years abroad and decided to import it to the uk. It is very strong and made from recycled materials.
as it deep 15c'mm you will not need any stakes.

I exhibited in Bbcc Gardeners world and sold lots of these- and people said that they were looking for something like that.
    for all LJ members:
    1. free samples- just e-mail me your address:
    2. a good discount - I import these from the manufacturer- so prices are great.
    3. see/order :
    4. It will be a big help for me as I still struggle to get a living in the UK. and got a stock here.

Also have green enviro edging -that one is great where using electric strimmer-cost a bit less.
Can also supply the wavy lawn edging but It is nort a good quality and it never last.

  • The best one I've seen was using block paving bricks laid side by side, short side next to the grass......... the man who laid them dug a trench first, about 8" deep, 8" wide and then filled with about 3" concrete....... once that had set, he just laid the block on mortar on the "foundation" so top of blocks level with the lawn......... did take a bit of time but nothings shifted in years.
  • I've used red block paving bricks which make a nice feature edging . Easy to go around corners etc. and frost proof. Laid on mortar bed.
Doing project at moment to retain gravel from tarmac drive but also looks good dec. gravel against grass .....

  • Well for anyone looking for any edging, I think that I managed to master it in the last few years from installing and selling all sort of edging. Here is a little guide:

you may like to built any brick or stone edging that add a well seen frame, it take a bit of work, it is a matter of will it add to the the whole design.
sure there is a cost with that one material + labor probably around 20.00 as a rough guide (up to material and your time cost).

strimmer proof edgings: in this group you will have long lasting edgings for aggregates or lawns,
It could be metal or heavy duty plastic, the metal comes in sections and is very expensive.
heavy duty lawn edging comes in rolls of up to 50m, in all depth. Both should last many years, the heavy duty is easier to cut and bend the metal is save a bit of digging.

the third option is cheaper is the enviro edging will be great for shear users. non expensive but non brittle like cheap edgings.

For anyone that work with lawns planting or maintenance I think it is worth keeping few samples in the car to offer customers. It is not just looks better, also save on labor smoke and noise more than 60% . the heavy duty is actually made from 100% recycled plastic.
  • I have supplied steel strip in various sizes and thicknesses for this job. I have rolled some to a radius and some we have welded spikes to.
The biggest job was one and a quarter tonne of 100x5mm flat cut into 3metre lengths and galvanised.
