Echo PB blower cutting out

My "freebie" Echo PB is very nice, but after about 15 minutes of running fine it slows, revs a few times, then dies. Any simple ideas to fix it? It's old and well-used, but serviced recently. The air intake rubber tube (filter to carb) is perished, everything else looks fine.

Being a two stroke it can only be a few things.
Worn piston / rings / scored barrel
Carb needing cleaned ie; needle, float chamber, diaphram punctured or air fuel mixer screw adjustment.
If its been serviced i am assuming that the plug and air filter are ok. Only other thing i can think of is fuel mixture is wrong. If the air filter is soggy with oil thats a good indicator of over oiling / wrong mixture being used. Or as you say the rubber at the intake needs replaced
  • I don't know about Echos but Stihl machines have a vent at the top of the tank which lets air in to replace the fuel as it used, otherwise a vacuum is produced in the tank which eventually stops the fuel getting through to the engine. If there is a vent, might be worth checking it is ok and not blocked with debris. A simple way to check it is when the machine stops after 15 minutes..... take the fuel cap off and see if there is a hissing as you remove it as the air enters the tank, you know the vent is the problem......... on old motorcycles/Briggs Stratton engines, they used to have a little pinhole in the filling cap to let the air in.

  • Filter and plug are new. To my non-mechanical mind the air intake would only suck in air if it's holed, which is what it does anyway, but am I being stupid here?

Strange, as it works perfectly for 15 mins or more, so it must be due to getting hot. It is a bit smokey on startup, but not more than some other Stihl machines I've had over the years that have gone on for ages!

We've had several coil packs (?) break down on various bits of Stihl.

In one instance it was like the on/off switch being flicked . Other situation was when hot, repair shop said it was coil breaking down under heat.

Mention it, purely as alternative idea. On the Stihl, cost was IRO £40 + vat to repair.

I had a sthil that ran ok for 10-15 mins then would cut out. Turned out to be a scored barrel. Ad the engine heated up and expanded the petrol was being was being lost down the side of the piston and eventually stop running. But there was a similar post last year which Pro Guard resolved for the member but as he left i dont know if his posts are still available to search for.
  • My gut instinct would be that its heating up and either the piston rings are gone, or the pot is worn unevenly - so Fuel/air mix gets lost which would explain it loosing power and cutting out. I assume if left for 2-3 mins it will run again?
