9 times out of 10 it will be some crap in the carb.

either under a diaphragm or under the needle.

if it’s old ish it might be the diaphragms are knackered and need replacing.

    does it actually work?

    • The filter's been getting wet for a couple of months. Up to a couple of days ago it had been running ok, apart from being a pain to start. Now it idles ok but struggles and dies when revved.

You haven’t changed the brand or quality of two stroke oil have you?

        • Always use stihl oil. Checked the gearbox and it's well greased, blades lubed and moving freely. I suppose it could be muck in the carb like you suggest, possibly causing too much/little fuel flowing?

Too much fuel or not enough air. Have you changed the air filter recently?

id change air filter first or if you can find somewhere not dusty take it off completely just for a minute and see how it behaves

Oh and ignore gearbox / blades as they nothing to do with this problem

            • The filter was changed a few days ago due to it getting wet, will try with it off later. Is it worth getting a can of carb cleaner to try?

If fresh filter it’s likely to be inside the carb. Sometimes if filter is full carb doesn’t get enough air so floods engine.

get carb cleaner and take carb to bits don’t just spray it in there. If not sure how probably best to take it somewhere!

  • Could also be a fault with the fuel tank vent - less than a fiver on ebay.

    • The engine dies almost instantly when revved, would it take a while for vacuum to build and kill the engine if the vent was faulty?
