Ebay opinions

As per a previous post RE rear tine rotovators. Been scouring Ebay for a few weeks, we have noticed that there are numerous advertisers registered as " Private Sellers" who are obviously traders judging from their " sellers other items" and feedback which lists sales of numerous items of the same type eg mowers, strimmers, blowers etc .

They are obviously doing this to get out of their legal obligations as a trader under the Sale of Goods legislation, why is Ebay allowing this? It must be easy for Ebay to monitor regular repeat sellers who list the same type of goods on a regular basis?

Have you bought from these "Private Sellers"? What has been your experience?

Seems like the internet is the new wild west.

Hence the request when LJ was asking for thoughts on improving this site myself and others suggested a sales and wants section for members only.

Still looking for that rear tine rotovator !!!

    • Thanks Adam, it's appreciated. Two issues ! We are in North Staffordshire and did'nt want anything that big, more Husqvarna TR348 size. That's very cheap for a BCS machine wonder if it has problems ? Thanjs anyway.

Thing is, you will likely have to travell for what you want. I have recently dispersed (via Ebay and other means), a relaitively large quantity of old/broken/unused kit, spares for machines we no longer have and other oddball trade related items.

On three occasions three different buyers have travelled in excess of three or four hour trips each way.

One didn't manage to get to collect until 9.15PM last night and still had three hours to go back home, another had left at 3.30AM to get to me for 8 AM.

Every buyer has been sent multiple photos/videos etc of the machines being started and run etc so they have all been happy and confident in what they have purchased...

Here on Gumtree local area there are Three machines for sale

Honda Tiller reverse gears one year old £800

      Camon C8 £700

      Camon C8 £500 just serviced

All say collection only which is the best idea .

Had some good honest deals off Gumtree I travelled 60 miles to buy a mantis used tiller with Kawasaki engine and recently walked Five miles to buy used bike and rode it home .

Had some car parts off eBay also tools and records , car parts listed as a business offering returns .

Best though  to follow your gut instinct when buying machinery unseen .

      • John, interested in the Honda, been on Gumtree can't see it. Could you either send the link or let me know what area of the country it is. Many thanks Peter

  • The Business sellers masquerading as Private Ebayers is a hot topic on the ebay forums, small business sellers who are correctly registered are up in arms about it. Mainly as the private sellers often receive hefty discounts on ebay fees so can undercut legit businesses on price. Ebay very rarely crack down on the practice. Whether buying from a business or not, you are covered by Ebay guarantee that the item is as described. There's only effectively a 30 day warranty anyhow whichever type of seller it is. Unless a business is an authorised distributor for a manufacturer's products who may offer additional warranty beyond this period. I understand that legislation designed to protect consumers doesn't apply to a lot of business purchases anyhow
