Dream job on georgian house

Well after a very interesting phone call from a client the other night i was invited to go and view their property with the scope for some future work. Upon arrival through two massive gates and a long sweeping drive i was in shock. The property is huge, I met the clients to which i then proceeded to be taken on a tour of all the old gardens which have been left to ruin. Then to my surprise i was asked if i would be interested into restoring all borders which include a massive 20ft high red brick 100ft long wall which is south facing. a magnificiant kitchen garden and a huge fig tree that needs training to another wall. I have 5 different areas in all including front of house to sort. So the reason why i am on here is to ask for a little help from fellow gardeners as in what you would recommend for planting, I'm going to do some research on the internet into what would of been planted there originally. The project is massive and i'm so excited about it. thanks all, milo

  • one bit of advice i would give, is dont get carried away with it. Ive done a few large projets and got so excitied by them you lose sight of the fact that you are doing it to earn money! Always keep in the back of your mind that it is a job as well as a gret oppurtunity, and allow for contingencies as they always crop up on bigger jobs, and clients have a funny knack of thinking that because you are there it doesnt cost much more to do something!

nice to get a good exciting one you can get your teeth into though, enjoy it!

  • many thanks my friend, and i will get photo's of stages from the very beginning to the end if there is one :)

  • hi there

i've been offered 2 days min a week and have priced daily, also i've been offered work right through the year with the offer of being the main gardener. The clients have already made the point that they want to make a mark on the place. Its all very exciting

    cheers

Are you going to work a certain number of hours a week there,

or do you have to give a price for the whole job ?

Sounds like it could be all year round if you get it right, hopefully

you will post some photo's soon.

Milo, projects like these are amazing to work on. I did a mansion that once belonged to Sir Walter Scott, a very famous novelist and playwright. A selfmade multi millionaire bought in a rather run down state and spent £000000's on the house and gardens. My company was appointed to carry out revamping the 2 acres of garden, even discovered the original sunken garden and brought it back to its former glory. Have to say I was gutted when the owner sold up to a couple coming back to the uk from the usa. Enjoy it, it is definately one for your portfolio :-)
  • Hi Milo

Many congrats on your new project.

John at Ace Garden Services, many thanks also.

If the property is an NT property, as a rule, they require peat-free grown plants.

All of our production is peat-free, and you can now view our stock list on www.southwestlandscapecentre.co.uk and just click on Stock List.

We can also suggest a Peat-Free Herbaceous supplier, that currently suppliers many NT properties for plants sales.  Their quality, like our is superb.

    many thanks
