Draining fuel end of season

Hi, do you guys run your machinery dry at the end of the season. I usually do but at the start of this season some of my machines wouldn't start. I was wondering if doing it forces all the crap into the carb?

The reason is more likely to be any residual fuel has gone off and clogged the carb inside. Even running machines till they stop won't clear every last drop and with this new E10 petrol I suspect things are about to get a whole lot worse - local mower shop is already seeing issues and i have got through an unprecedented amount of spark plugs this. Stihl HS81R usually gets a new plug at service - this year its had four already!

    • Never had to replace a plug in any of my Stihl eqipment and some of it is nearly 10 years old and gets regular use.  One of my mowers is 20 years old and still on the original plug!!   I've never drained the fuel out................ try and run the machines a couple of times during the winter and that works fine...................... if somethings hard to start, some Easystart into the air intake invariably gets it started.

With the E10 fuel, it's worth bearing in mind the "old" E5 fuel had 5% enthanol so an extra 5% to get up to 10% really isn't as significant as people imagine.

Personally leave some fuel in and keep turning the machines over , also give them a mini service , change filters , grease gearboxes , except mowers which are now with the repair workshop getting serviced they always come back fuelled up so same thing keep them turning over .

New fuel not sure how well it will last stored .

I run e5 petrol in my machines. I wouldn't personally use e10 The machine's I use now and then I use aspinol.

When storeing machine's, I drain them, run them dry, put in a small amount of aspinol and then machine for bit to clean it through.

  • I have never run my engines dry as in my opinion the rubbers in the carb dry out and then go stiff causing them not to work, i have always used a good mixture of Briggs and Stratton Fuel Fit this has never let me down as i believe it keeps the rubbers flexible.

  • My repairer suggested running Aspen through on the last job before storage.

  • +1 on the Briggs and Stratton Fuel Fit, have used it in the fuel every year in the run up to xmas and have never had any starting issues.

    • Is there a two stroke version ?  I know about Aspen

        Works fine with 2t.

      • 4 stroke, 2 stroke mix, makes no difference to its efficacy
