Drainage issue

just a question that is stupid without more info than this picture I will post!

any clues as to why this patio has turned itself into a pond?!

anyeay my wife’s friend has decided that I must know so I’m asking you nice people!

from the pictures there aren’t any drainage holes in the walls but no idea other than that!

i personally think it’s just the amount of rain we have had as it’s has rained solidly for 3 days before today!

thanks all

Is there a drain chamber cover in that patio area somewhere and it’s just backfilling .....

A bit more info just come through!

there is supposed to be a soak away and a couple of gravel filled trenches (the blue pots and in between the 2 raised beds next to them)

ill ask about a drain cover but have a feeling knowing my wife’s friend that this has been done on the cheap to begin with so there won’t be one:)

Fence line beds and borders are all higher so assume lowest patio to be lowest part of garden
Is the gravel area free draining or over clay ? Water table may have risen and until goes down may have no where to go naturally drain

If there is a possibility that a water main is leaking you can get a sample tested to see if it is tap water that has been treated.

Similarly you can get it tested to see if it contains effluent.

To be honest though it looks like good old fashioned rain water and a lack of drainage.

  • Is that a hole in the wall on the Right hand side of the picture?

No don’t think so I thought that too. This is the only picture I’ve seen.
It seems because I cut grass I’m an expert at drainage?!!!!!
      • what type of membrane has been used under the gravel it could be polithine and running the water onto the flags as the gravel seems to have a lot of water standing on it

defiantly a drainage prob maybe the soakaway has been backfilled with rubble instead of a membrane wrapped cadge and not having enough holding capacity for the area

A bit more info has come my way. The soak away is in the gravel next to/under (not sure) the raised beds on the left and a trench in there too.
It seems the patio area was the same height as the edges of the fence (grass I think) and was excavated and patio laid.
It happens after even 1 day if strady rain it seems.
No weed membrane was put down.
  • My first impression is that the area is bound by brickwork with, I would think a concrete footing, creating a pond.  A soakaway is of no use if the ground is water logged.

If the gardens are on a slope, surface water will percolate from one garden to another, building a wall such as in the pic can cause a dam effect.
