    Yes. Each tiny piece of bamboo root (rhizome) has the potential to become a new plant. using the chippings as a mulch could cause a lot of problems.

    Also, by chipping the root instead of digging out the rootball, there's also the potential for the masses of small plantlets growing in the same area as the original mature plant.
