I've been doing some quotes earlier today, including a design we have been asked to quote that includes a simple patio area out into the garden.

Pricing up the patio, it was clear from plans it was an abnormal size and would result in wastage/cuts. So I mentioned this and suggested it was made a modular size in the interest of costs. They refused insisting that is the size suggested by their designer.

Do other people design or cost to 'modular' sizes depending on product selected or is it just me ?

  • I'm just about to construct a car port and after that a covered outdoor eating area from timber for two seperate clients. Both clients agreed to reduce the length of the roofs to accomodate timber available in standard lengths. I always try and go for standard dimensions for overall sizes [ usually multiples of 300 mm ] as it reduces construction time and wastage. I'd try and do the same with your customers.
