Just did this poll on the MSE, about when it is fair to haggle.

http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/poll/01-03-2016/where-is-it-fair-to-haggle-

Only 21% would never haggle for baby-sitter, gardener, cleaner

What do you think, should be people be able to haggle 'gardeners' rates?

It's a big fat NO from me, but I'm biased!

    Used to but not anymore.
I think it makes you look stupid as if you can't price it right in the first place!
So if you come down they think you were trying to rip them off in the first place!
It depends a bit on how much you need the work as well I suppose.
So it should be a no:-)

Doesn't happen often and normally it results in a few small percentage being knocked off (i.e. from the people who will haggle anything) which to be honest doesn't make you want to go the extra mile as it were for them. Or it's people who say 20 quid to a 85 quid job and I dont move for those people at all and probably 75% of the time they get someone else.

  • Did when I first started but now we're fortunate enough to have enough work, so have recently put prices up and my price is my price. Know what you're worth.

  • Nope, the price I give is my one and only price, I would have already 'sharpened my pencil' while working it out.

I well remember an experience probably 15 years ago, when I returned to a prospective customer, with my sketch and quotation for a driveway.  After running through the plan and price, with no hesitation they gave the OK.  I was a bit perturbed that it was so easy and gently inquired if they had any others to quote. "Oh yes! We had a company that advertises in the glossy weekend mags. The 'rep' came to see us and quoted £17,000.  After 3 hours of haggling and calling his 'manager' twice, he came down to £6,000!"  I had priced it at £6,500 and to quote the customer, they "wouldn't have touched them with a barge-pole!"

The job turned out very well and the couple happened to be Heads of two separate schools where they later recommended us and we won two very nice projects totalling almost £50K................and so it goes on!

We wouldn't haggle on price per se but would accept a reduction in specification to suit the clients' budget which would also allow us to protect our own margins whilst delivering a quality service.
