For the researching visitor there's a wealth of landscaping ideas, garden design ideas, lawn advice tips and advice about garden maintenance.

A tad angry today that I based my decision to stop work on a lawn preparation job based on the awful weather forecast for my area.

Was making good time when the heavens opened. Looking to where the weather was coming from (black clouds galore) & the fact that the forecast had said once the rain starts it will gradually get worse as the day continues with a yellow warning for high winds, I explained to my client that rather than turn her garden into a deep south swamp area, I would return tomorrow to finish it off.

This has obviously put me half a day behind & having watched the weather ease and turn dryer, I am kicking myself for actually trusting the forecast.

I've filled the time by delivering more flyers, but just wondered who else relies on "forecasts" for their decision making?

  • So hard to know, as they are wrong too often. Even the local forecast is iffy hour by hour, when they could give a better prediction by putting their head out of the met office window!

Today was forecast with rain in the afternoon, but it's literally started drizzling as I'm writing this at 17:00. Aside from spraying jobs, where you need to have the right conditions, I make my weather predictions by opening the curtains in the morning and looking at the sky....

I'm pretty much the same as Paul, head out the window and look up at the sky, I have a client who is ex met office forecaster, he was extremely happy when he retired as it meant he no longer got grief off his mates when the forecast was wrong, you just cant predict the weather in this country..

    • Blimey, Gary. And I was complaining about some light drizzle in the Chilterns at 5pm! :-)

  • I watch the forecast in the morning but they spend half of the time telling you what it has done in the night but having regular maintenance round some fortnightly some weekly and one offs booked in 3 or 4 weeks in advance or try and get there the next working day but it can play hell with the diary  I can remember quite a few years ago when it never stopped raining floods every where the diary went out of the window and a list made for whom to visit first and it took some getting back in to order

To an extent. I don't use the met office! I use met check. I check throughout the day and make adjustments where necessary!

Looks like the weather is going to turn warm for many areas of the UK.

  • Like most landscapers i watch the weather forecasts. However, I rarley take them as "cast in stone" as they are often wrong. I use them as a guide but make "pack up & go home" decisions on the day.

  • Firstly store this link on your phone, tablet etc

    http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/observation/rainfall-radar

This will show what is actually happening rather than a forecast.  By using the animation bar you can see what direction the rain is moving in & how fast, so it's easy to predict when it will arrive in your area. It's a godsend because it will tell you if it's a shower or a longer period of rain. It will also tell you the intensity.

If you have an Android phone then install Arcus Weather.  Put in your location & ask it to notify you when rain is imminent.  It will monitor the rainfall radar for you & is remarkably accurate.

For forecasts bookmark the yr.no page & type in your location.  Do the same for the XC weather page.  They each use a different model so look at both & take an average.

  • Very much so - being 'savvie' with the weather will earn you thousands over the years! Obviously the forecasts aren't 100%, but if you ignore the forecasts, it will cost you over all!
