DIY Sheds Vs Traditional Merchants

The large DIY sheds (B&Q TradePoint & Wickes) are clearly giving the traditional builders merchants a really hard time.... We have accounts and reasonable level of discount with main merchants, but they just can't beat some of the 'transparent' prices from the Sheds for bulk products (ie Aggs/Sand/Std paving etc) I also get the impression that merchant's stock levels are being reduced to the point of Just-In-Time ordering, or as we found Not-In-Time ordering... With prices expected to rise this year, it will be interesting to watch how this plays out. How have you found it ? Who do you rate as good and responsive to your landscaping needs ?

  • The problem I suspect independant builders merchants have, is they haven't got the buying power of the sheds, so can't compete on price for fast moving items. You see the same thing with the supermarkets, with regard to bedding plants they take the fast moving lines that the garden centres use to keep them afloat in the in the quiet times and bang them out at cost as loss leaders.
To be fair to the DIY stores, they do at least stock a greater range than just the few big earners that the supermarkets try but ultimately if the market is reduced to the major players then I think choice will suffer.
  • I've not found the quality of DIY store sheds to be up to much, I have a local shed manufacturer that I always use and have a deal with. My builders merchants can't compete on price.
