If it could get puntured I would get rid, I have been on the sharp end of a lithium battery going nuclear in the back of the van and mine were even in Stihl battery boxes.

Thanks Dave I suspected it would be the safest option .

Yes I remember your post you were incredibly lucky going by what I have seen on the news lately with people charging electric bikes up .

I don't charge any batteries overnight anymore .

  • if it happened to me, it would depend how bad the crack was. I sold one i'd been using for years which I only realised had a crack at the last minute, pointed it out to the buyer but they still wanted it anyway! Depends on your attitude to risk. As Dave rightly points out, even a seemingly undamaged battery has a possibility of going into melt down. Super Glue might be a help. Or buy an empty replacement casing for the same type of battery. Which a bit of a long shot as manufacturer's don't sell them. But maybe second hand from someone who stripped down a faulty pack. Also depends on the value/rarity/age of the pack. If my new Stihl AP500S got a crack I would be inconsolable.

I remember my dealer saying husqvarna will replace cracked battery cases free of charge, don’t know if this applies to other brands, probably worth investigating.

  • My understanding is that the case contains several cells, thermal runaway happens because of problems inside the cell.  If you can make it waterproof, I would go down that route myself.  NB Gaffa tape isn't waterproof, glue and/ or something like good quality insulating tape would be better.

Managed to bond it together with some epoxy resin and will keep it and charge it outside in a stone outbuilding for home use only , won't be transporting it around .

Had one faulty battery replaced and collected almost instantly by one company , very impressed by their customer service .

Also bought some battery bags designed to stop or slowdown thermal runaway .
