Ask your MP to write - I used to work for one doing casework, and it works. And its an easy thing for them to do. Check with their office for surgery dates/times and pop along (personal visit works faster) - or write if you can't. HMRC have a special section that fast tracks MP's queries. This may seem a big deal, but it's not - you'd be amazed at how much they get asked to do by constituents that is nowhere near as important as your sort of problem.
Not a scarcastic response, but that's why we have accountants ..Do you have one?, if so they have direct lines into the Inspectors and have solved problems for us in a flash.
Also, company status (ie dormant/trading etc) is normally dealt with by Companies House and notified to HMRC by CT41G form (bit rusty on this so check first).
Have you notified them correctly? Otherwise, I guess HMRC will pick up on your status from their online reports. We have two dormant companies at the moment and just create dormant trading accounts and submit to Companies House by October (?).
If you choose to deal with them, make an absolute record of every call/letter, do not send originals and ideally deal by post (easier to track/audit).
Thanks - I think im going down the Recorded delivery route - Letter detailing everything - hopefully its just a mix up, I have letters from HMRC last year listing accounting dates etc, so they obviously got the CT41g initially.
Ahhh Time spent not earning. Bliss????/ nah
Gary - I never thought about the Accountant - I feel quite daft now, under the nose somewhat there!
Not a problem David, reminds of that old landscaping saying..
"Can't see the woods for the trees" - so often true when close up and dealing with problems.
Hope it gets sorted - there's enough hassle without HMRC red tape, errors etc

Big stick and tiny carrot come to mind.
I finally got through to someone at HMRC today - they can offer no explanation as to why they thought I was dormant, but do at least accept the forms were sent and info is on the system.
Need to record all conversations, as I have the gut feeling they will be back.
