Cylinder mowers

Customer gave me a Honda HC20 cylinder mower the other day. Well i was extremely happy as it is in good condition and runs and cuts well. Its a 20" cut with a honda GX110 engine on it.

Used it a few times on the most ornamental lawns i cut. The standard of finish is superior to any of the rotary mowers i have owned. I just wish that the rest of my customers would have their lawns cut more often and remove the gravel etc from them so i could use it more.

Anyone else like to use cylinder mowers?

  • They are a wonder to use but too many lawns are uneven that I care for, and too many people buy into the falacy of gravel being low maintenane (as opposed to being super high due to weeding issues and keeping it in place). Sadly, cylinder mowers would = smashed windows and shotgun-esque damage to every tree, shrub and wall in many gardens... that and lots of scalping.

  • When I first started working for myself, I used a Suffolk Punch 18" cylinder mower... amazingly, it lasted ages. Beautiful cut... better than a rotary mower, wet grass no problem........... only snag was it didn't like long grass and if you hit a stone, it really did damage to the cylinder/bottom blade. Also, every year, the cylinder needed to be reground and a new bottom blade which was a bit of a pain compared to sharpening the rotary.

Its not a honda mower they were made by web mowers for honda

Yes, unfortunately most lawns are a no go area for cylinder mowers. I have about half a dozen weekly mowing jobs that are suitable.

Sharpening a cylinder is sadly beyond me but i have had this one cutting a sheet of paper very cleanly all the way along its width.

I had read that it was web mowers or wolseley webb that manufactured these mowers and were discontinued about 15 years ago. In which case there will be a problem getting spare parts although the lawnmaster cylinder mowers look almost identical.

Certainly a mower that i will be using every week, if only for half a dozen lawns which are all done on the same day anyway.
